BackupSoft is not to be trusted with these backups.

I bought a Toshiba external hard disk in the fall of 2012, and this software came with it. I backed up my Windows XP desktop nine times, very easily. Also I backed up the laptop and the same operating system. The desktop hard drive failed, and I tried to restore its backup set to the laptop. BackupSoft does not recognize the desktop backup set when running in the laptop. It recognizes the laptop set fine, and restores anything in it fine. And the backup sets themselves can be copied to the laptop. But they are .rim files, written and understood only by BackupSoft.

So I call Toshiba: they say it isn't their problem, call Microsoft. I look at the software, and it is copyright Toshiba. I visit their website, find one article about "the program does not recognize backup set". Its method does not work. It did work when I re-installed the laptop operating system, and had to use it to find the laptop backup set, but no luck on the desktop set. The same version of the same operating system.

I googled the problem and you would not believe how many users are asking their favorite PC Help webpages how to fix this problem. And how many responders have no idea. I did see one reference to PowerSuite which you have to buy, and which may have solved this problem. But the consensus seems to be don't use it. I would add, if their response to myself and others is any indication, don't buy Toshiba.
